Bewdley Chess Club provides a welcoming environment for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy the game. The club is free to join and offers coaching for those looking to improve their skills. Founded by Keith Thompson, the group encourages community participation, sometimes gathering to play outside local cafés to invite passers by for a game and handing out flyers with tips on how to improve.
The club actively supports good causes, hosting an annual charity tournament with a low entry fee of £5.00. The tournament is seeded in the early rounds to encourage casual players and juniors to participate. This event has successfully raised funds for a Prostate Cancer charity, with local businesses donating prizes and the local Mayor attending the presentations.
Sessions are held at multiple venues across the town throughout the week, managed by Secretary John Wrench. The club meets at St Georges Hall on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 14:00. The Bewdley Library Chess Club runs every Thursday from 14:30 to 16:30 as a free drop in session. Additionally, Friday sessions take place at St Anne’s Church on Load Street between 11:00 and 14:00. Parking is available nearby on the High Street for £0.70 per hour, at the Dog Lane pay and display, or for free at the Leisure Centre located a short walk away.
