The Mayor of Bewdley Junior Charity Chess Tournament, which also serves as the Worcestershire Junior Championship, comes to St George’s Hall on Load Street on Saturday 1 August, running from 10am to 5pm. It is a charity tournament for junior players, raising money for the Mayor of Bewdley’s chosen causes.
Open to under-eighteens, it is split into two sections, Under 18 and Under 12, with age prizes within each section down to the best under-eight. There are cash prizes and medals, with thanks to Chess in Schools and Communities.
This is an English Chess Federation rated event, so every player needs to hold Junior Gold membership of the ECF on the day. Junior Gold membership is free for the first year, and you can join or renew through the ECF membership page or at englishchess.org.uk. Entry is £10 per player, booked online through the tournament entry page.
Each player has fifteen minutes for their moves, plus a five second increment per move from the first move. Six rounds run across the day, starting at 10am, 11am and noon, breaking for lunch from 1pm to 1.30pm, then continuing at 1.30pm, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
St George’s Café will be open through the day with drinks and snacks, and there is a raffle in aid of the Bewdley Mayor’s Charity. The tournament supports Bewdley Dementia Support Group, St George’s Hall Bewdley, Pets as Therapy and Wyre Horseways.
