Accessibility Statement
Read the Visit Bewdley accessibility statement. Find out how I am making this independent local guide easy to use for everyone and how to report any issues.
Visit Bewdley is an independent project built by one person. I want everyone to be able to use this site to find a great local café, discover upcoming events, or learn about the town. I am doing my absolute best to make the platform as accessible and easy to navigate as possible.
Because I am a solo developer, I do not have a corporate testing team. However, I have built this website with accessibility in mind from day one.
How the site is built
I manually review the site to ensure it is easy to read and navigate. My approach includes:
- Using a clear and high contrast colour palette so text stands out against the background.
- Adding descriptive alternative text to images so screen readers can describe them.
- Keeping the layout consistent and the language plain and simple.
Under the hood
The website framework provides a responsive foundation. This means the site automatically adapts to fit mobile phones, tablets, and large desktop screens. It also includes specific structural code to help assistive technology understand the site:
- Keyboard navigation support with visible focus outlines.
- Hidden links allowing users to bypass the main menu and jump straight to the page content.
- ARIA attributes that provide hidden labels for screen reading software.
- Semantic HTML headings to keep the content logically organised.
What your browser can do
You can also use the built in settings of your web browser to make visiting this site a better experience. Most modern browsers allow you to:
- Zoom in or out to make text larger.
- Change the default font or background colours.
- Use built in reading modes to strip away menus and layout elements leaving just the plain text.
- Use native text to speech tools or connect to your operating system screen reader.
Found a problem?
Accessibility is an ongoing effort. If you find something on the site that is difficult to use, or if you cannot access a specific piece of information, please let me know. I am actively maintaining the site and will do my absolute best to fix it.
