Two mainline diesel locomotives from the Class 56 fleet are set to visit the Severn Valley Railway for its upcoming diesel gala. The preserved line, which runs through Bewdley and connects to Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, has confirmed the arrival of the locomotives as part of its event plans for 2025.
Subject to final availability, locomotives 56090 and 56094 are expected to travel to the railway courtesy of Colas Rail. Their visit adds to what is already a varied line-up of guest engines due to appear at the gala.
The Class 56s will be joining other notable visitors, including RailAdventure’s HST power cars and locomotives from Freightliner—specifically a Class 66 and a Class 70. The arrival of modern mainline traction is likely to be a highlight for enthusiasts attending the multi-day diesel-themed event.
The Severn Valley Railway has also confirmed that its own home diesel fleet will feature prominently throughout the gala. This includes examples of Classes 17, 20, 33, 37, 40, 42, 50 and 52. The railway’s reputation for hosting diverse and well-supported diesel galas continues to attract interest from across the UK heritage scene.
The gala offers an opportunity for visitors to see a wide mix of traction in action on the scenic route along the Severn Valley, with Bewdley Station acting as a key hub during the event. Locomotive movements, timetables and ticketing details are expected to be announced in due course on the Severn Valley Railway’s official website.
The Class 56 locomotives were originally built between 1976 and 1984 and are known for their use in heavy freight operations. Though fewer examples remain in active mainline service today, several are preserved or remain operational for rail freight companies such as Colas Rail. Their appearance at heritage railways offers an increasingly rare chance to see them in action outside of freight depots and infrastructure work.
Full details about running schedules, routes and the confirmed final roster of visiting and home fleet locomotives will be published closer to the date of the gala.
For updates and event information, the Severn Valley Railway’s official channels will provide the latest announcements.
