The Severn Valley Railway (SVR) is a premier heritage railway running for 16 miles between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, following the scenic course of the River Severn. Bewdley Station serves as a central hub on the line, renowned for its beautifully preserved GWR architecture and floral displays. The station offers a nostalgic atmosphere with its vintage Refreshment Room and the “Station Fund Shop,” which supports ongoing restoration projects.
Passengers can travel behind original steam locomotives or heritage diesel trains, stopping at various restored stations that provide gateways to local walks and villages. A major highlight of the journey is the Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley, which features a collection of out-of-service locomotives and interactive railway exhibits. The railway also hosts a busy calendar of themed events, including 1940s weekends, Steam Galas, and family-oriented visits from popular characters.
In addition to regular passenger services, the SVR offers specialised experiences such as on-train dining, murder mystery evenings, and driver experience days. As a volunteer-led organisation, the railway relies on a dedicated team to maintain its historic infrastructure and rolling stock. Its position in Bewdley makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the town’s riverside and local nature reserves while enjoying a journey into the golden age of rail travel.
